CORO HOSTS YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Dozens of budding chess grandmasters from across Furness showcased their strategic skills at the Coro this week.
Around 30 young people gathered for the Ulverston Junior Chess Championship, an annual event organised by the Furness Junior Chess Association (FJCA) which runs clubs and workshops in schools and venues across the area.
The competition was free to enter and open to anyone aged between 6 and 18 years regardless of ability and was the first to be held in Ulverston.
Competition organiser Peter Hanks said the Championship was an important part of the association’s efforts to promote the game to a new generation of young people. Several members of the FJCA will be representing Cumbria at the Pennine Cup competition in Manchester on Sunday
“I was really pleased with the turnout. We are looking to expand and develop the game as much as we can and it was great to see so many young people enjoying themselves and playing in such a good spirit,” said Peter.
The FJCA runs a weekly club at Ulverston Market Hall every Tuesday after school until 4.45 pm. Free to attend and all welcome. Call Peter on 07833 934031 for details.
