The beautiful acoustic at Bardsea lends itself splendidly to stringed instruments. The Festival are delighted to welcome back Alberto Mesirca for a solo guitar recital in this stunning setting, with a programme which surveys music from the 16th to the 20th centuries, written by Spanish composers, or inspired by Spain. Sor’s technically demanding treatment of Mozart’s O cara armonia’ is one of the most famous of his many works for guitar. In contrast, although he was surrounded by the sound of the guitar and was friends with many guitarists, De Falla’s Homage is the only work he ever wrote for guitar – an exquisite piece, quoting Debussy’s Soirèe dans Grenade, and La Puerta del Vino. You will also hear José’s Sonata, one of the greatest and most significant 20th century works written for guitar, as well as some well known (and highly virtuosic!) pieces by Granados and Albéniz, which are sure to conjure up the spirit of España!
