Beethoven Septet in Eb Major, Op.20
We are thrilled to present some of Europe’s top instrumentalists joining forces for an evening of musical camaraderie and sublime chamber music at Ulverston Parish Church. Spotlighting wind repertoire in the first half, Taffanel was the founder of the French Flute School, and his award-winning and elegant Wind Quintet G Minor is a true gem. Nielsen’s Wind Quintet is one of the staples of the wind repertoire, and is perfectly scored to showcase the characteristics of each instrument. In the second half, winds and strings compliment each other in timbral symbiosis for Beethoven’s much-loved Septet, a work the composer actually loved to hate; its popularity eclipsed many of his more innovative works – which irked Beethoven greatly – but its enduring influence and appeal remains to this day.
