Ulverston International Music Festival is thrilled to welcome Peter Donohoe to open their 2025 Festival.
Peter has been regarded as one of our country’s pre-eminent pianists since his astonishing success at the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, arguably the most famous of all keyboard contests. He has devised a cleverly woven programme book-ended with two sets of variations on the celebrated Prélude in C minor (No. 20) of Chopin. We hear that very prélude as part of the entire set of twenty-four, a remarkably varied work which employs every major and minor key. Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a single theme show the range of variation of character and emotion such as skilled composed can draw out of a single theme.
